The John and Amy Mewhiney Cancer Foundation was established to raise money for lung cancer research, specifically to develop methods for early detection of lung cancer and also to raise consciousness about this disease.

Lung cancer kills more Americans than breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers combined. This year over 157,000 people will die of lung cancer; this is 28% of all cancer deaths. While advances have been made in the treatment of many other cancers, often due to tests which have enabled early detection of these diseases, treatments for lung cancer have remained relatively static. The five year survival rate for lung cancer is approximately 15% because most patients are diagnosed in the later stages. Research indicates that the survival rate could increase up to 50% if the cancer is caught in its earliest stages.

Funding for lung cancer research, however, is dramatically behind funding for other cancers. Our purpose is to raise money to find methods for early detection. We have chosen to work with Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland because the Cancer Center there is actively engaged in research to detect and treat the early onset of lung cancer. Holy Cross has re-named its lung cancer fund the John and Amy Mewhiney Lung Cancer Fund in honor of the work that you have helped us to accomplish. We believe that if a way can be found to detect lung cancer in its earliest stages this disease could be treated successfully as many cases of breast and prostate cancer are.

This Foundation is dedicated to the lives and memories of Jack Mewhiney and his daughter Amy, who both died of cancer.

Advocacy Alert
Congressman Timothy Bishop (D-N.Y.) has introduced legislation to outlaw burn pits. The bill would detail the history of every burn pit, compile a registry of those exposed, and provide special medical exams. A number of veterans returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan have been diagnosed with diseases, including lung cancer. For more information about burn pits and what you can do to help, visit the The Burn Pits Action Center.

Contact your elected officials to urge them to support the Lung Cancer Mortality Reduction Act. This groundbreaking legislation declares lung cancer a public health priority, and launch a comprehensive plan to cut lung cancer's mortality rate in half by 2016. Contact your officials HERE, and while you're there, you can send President Obama a message to let him know it's time for a change for lung cancer, too!

Lacordaire Pound Party
Lacordaire Academy will once again be hosting a Pound Party to raise money for the foundation on May 7. Many thanks to Lacordaire for its continued support!

The Annual John and Amy Mewhiney Cancer Foundation Dinner
The seventh annual dinner was held in November, and the money raised by our live auction, raffles, and honor book all helped to make the night a success! All money raised was contributed to the John and Amy Mewhiney Lung Cancer Fund at Holy Cross Hospital Cancer Institute at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland. Thanks to all our wonderful volunteers, attendees, and donors! Plans for this year's event are already under way-- check back for more information about the Eighth Annual Foundation dinner!

We are now registered in Maryland, as well as in New Jersey. Our new official address is in Maryland. We will continue to operate in New Jersey, while expanding our fund raising campaigns into Maryland.
